Gas detection tubes are used to determine the concentration of a particular gas in air without the need for an instrument calibration and are widely used in industrial, marine and laboratory environments where a rapid reading of the gas in air is required. Each tube contains a reagent in a sealed glass tube which will change colour when exposed to a target gas and length of colour change indicates concentration. This renders gas detection tubes a useful solution where portable electronic detectors are not available or practical, or for spot checks or pre-entry checks.
How Gas Detection Tubes Work
The fixed volume of air pumped by hand passes through the tube, and the reagent within the tube reacts with the target gas, creating a visible change in colour along a calibrated scale. The time of measurement is generally from a few seconds to about 15 minutes, depending on the type of gas and concentration range being measured. For instance, a Dräger gas detection tube can detect the presence of hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) at a low level (0.2 to 2000 ppm) and at higher concentrations found in the industrial environment. Tubes are also available for other gases than H₂S, such as ammonia, carbon monoxide and a variety of solvents, and are calibrated for their specific chemical reaction.
The applications of industrial and marine settings are discussed.
In confined space entry work, firefighting scenarios, disaster response, and normal industrial hygiene inspections, gas detection tubes are utilized. They are simple to use and can be helpful as a backup or verification tool to electronic gas detection instruments, especially in places where electronic instruments need to be calibrated frequently, but it is impractical to do so. Gas detection tubes are used in marine vessels, oil and gas locations, and laboratories because they are portable, and they do not require battery power or continuous calibration like electronic sensors do.
Choosing Gas Detection Tubes
The appropriate gas detection tube will vary according to the gas or gases to be monitored, the concentration range of the gas to be detected and the rate of response required on site. Facilities usually have a variety of tubes available that are compatible with the hazards they may have in their operation, as well as a suitable hand pump for proper sampling. As tubes have a shelf life and are single use, facilities must have a reliable supply chain to ensure that they have the tubes they need at the right time.
